Sign Language Project
Supported a sign language research project in Haiti to gain government recognition of indigenous sign language.
Camps
IDP provides funding support and volunteers for camps for deaf youth in Haiti (since 2011) and Guatemala (since 2013). See more information under “News” about our recent camps.
Internships
We collaborate with Gallaudet University Career Center in the placement of interns in Guatemala at the LAVOSI deaf school and for the Haiti camp at the Montfort and St. Vincent’s schools. In addition, IDP welcomes an intern each semester from students majoring in International Studies at Gallaudet University.
Community Outreach
We have collaborated with Peace Corps to help expand their contacts so that more deaf persons can become Peace Corps volunteers. IDP provided consultation in developing a Peace Corps Response volunteer position focusing on teacher training in Guatemala.
- Cultural Event/Fundraiser in support of Ephphatha Institute for the Deaf (EID), our partner deaf school in Kumba, Cameroun. This event took place on November 15, 2013 at Gallaudet University in Washington DC.
- New Deal Café Fundraiser, July 2014. IDP sponsored a fundraiser in Greenbelt, MD at the New Deal café. Guest of honor was Alvaro de Leon, President of the LAVOSI school in Guatemala, who was in town to receive the Edward Miner Gallaudet Award during Gallaudet University's 150th reunion.
- Sunset Cruise, September, 2014 and 2015. IDP sponsored this two-hour sunset cruise in Lewes, Delaware aboard a 60-seat pontoon boot which cruised the beautiful backwaters of the Broadkill River. This was a fundraiser for our camps.
- IDP sold Guatemalan crafts during several events at Gallaudet University during 2014-2015--the Homecoming (October), Holiday Fair (December), Valentines Day (February) and the Deaf Women of Color Conference (April).
- Film screening of "Deaf People in Havana," August 2015. IDP hosted a screening of Deaf Nation's film about Deaf people's lives in Havana, Cuba at the Greenbelt Theatre.
- Car wash, October 2015. With partnership of Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Gallaudet University, IDP hosted a three-day car wash.
